KCON 2012 [Mi experiencia]

La quinta edición de KCON ya está a la vuelta de esquina, y una vez más podré ser parte de este gran evento dedicado al mundo del entretenimiento coreano. Al ser una asistente desde la primera edición de esta convención y ver su evolución, me pareció buena idea escribir mi experiencia de cada edición de este evento; así, partiré desde el origen de KCON en el año 2012.

Para este año, yo solo había asistido a un concierto de k-pop: K-POP MASTERS en Las Vegas, Nevada en el 2011. Cuando vi el anuncio de que la primera convención- concierto de k-pop sería en Irvine (súper cerca) me llamó la atención, pero solo habían anunciado a dos artistas; cuando anunciaron a VIXX, Nu’est y BAP fue cuando decidí que tendría que ir. Al ser todavía nueva en eso de comprar boletos para conciertos, no los compre en cuanto salieron, me esperé y ya adquirí los boletos en la parte superior izquierda del recinto.

The fifth edition of KCON is just around corner, and once again I can be part of this great event dedicated to the world of Korean entertainment. As an attendant since the first edition of this convention and see its evolution, I thought I would write my experience of each edition of this event; so, I will start from the origin of KCON, in 2012.

At this year, I had only attended one concert of k-pop: K-POP MASTERS in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2011. When I saw the announcement of the first k-pop concert/convention would be in Irvine (super close) it caught my attention, but they had only announced two artists; when they finally announced VIXX, NU'EST and BAP was when I decided I would have to go. Being new at buying concert tickets, I did not buy them as soon as they were released, I waited a few days and then purchased them, they weren’t at the front, but at the left side of the stadium.

Con 25 programas dentro de la convención y 55 panelistas invitados; la entrada a la convención era gratis y al aire libre en las afueras del recinto donde sería el concierto por un día. Evento por Mnet America, patrocinado por Verizon Wireless, LG, Asiana Airlines, y State Farm, promovido con la ayuda de Koreaboo, Powerhouse Live, y Anime News Network.

EVENT FACTS:

KCON held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Irvine, CA on October 13, 2012. Artists: 4minute, BAP, Vixx, NU'EST, EXO-M, and G-Na. With 25 programs within the convention and 55 guest panelists; the entrance to the convention was free and outdoors for a day, outside the venue where the concert would take place. The event was thanks to Mnet America, sponsored by Verizon Wireless, LG, Asiana Airlines, and State Farm, promoted with the help of Koreaboo, Powerhouse Live, and Anime News Network.

Este es el horario del primer KCON, como pueden ver hubo muchas actividades, pero pocas en comparación del más reciente KCON. This is the schedule of the first KCON, as you can see there were tons of activities, but few if you compare it to the latest KCON.

Ese día llegué por la mañana alrededor de las 9 am y ya había una larga fila; debo decir que la presencia de las fans de EXO se hacía más que presente, incluso en la fila era más que obvio que la mayoría iban por ellos. El día era muy caluroso y una vez que entraras, no podías salir de nuevo. Las puertas abrieron a las 10 am y yo entre a eso de las 10:40 am; la caminata para llegar hasta donde comenzaba todo estaba retirada y con el sol se sentía más larga.

That day I arrived in the morning around 9 am and there was already a long line; I must say that the presence of EXO fans became pretty obvious, even by just standing in the line it was clear that most of the people were there for them. The day was very hot and once you walked in, you could not get out again. The doors opened at 10 am and I got in at around 10:40 am; the walk to get to the convention was pretty long, that with the hot sun, made it longer.

Al fin llegué a la convención y corrí a donde se harían los fan engagements; desgraciadamente ya había mucha gente y se suponía que había una fila para eso, pero no. Después me enteré de que los encargados le daban los pases a quien estuviera allí cerca y se enojaron y se los daban en bonches. Para no hacer el cuento largo, no me tocó ningún pase. Sin embargo, justo atrás de la carpa donde estaba ocurriendo eso, se encontraba la alfombra roja donde me la pase casi todo el día y tuve suerte. Allí pude ver a EXO-M (y una fan que no olvidaré por gritarle tan fuerte a Kris que lo asustó), a BAP mucho más cerca ya que todas las exóticas se fueron, y por último a 4minute.

I finally got to the convention and ran to where the fan engagements would take place; unfortunately there were many people and was supposed that here was a line for that, but no. I later knew that the staff gave the vouchers to whoever was there, and when they got angry, they gave them in bunches. Long story short, I didn’t get any vouchers. However, the red carpet was just behind that tent, I spend almost all day there and I was lucky very lucky. I had the chance to see EXO-M (and a fan I will not forget for yelling so loud that scared Kris), also BAP and much closer since all exotics left the place, and finally 4minute.

Pude comprar algo de mercancía como un disco de BAP, una playera de Nu’est, otra de VIXX, entre otras cosas. Otra actividad en la que pude participar fue en firmar un poster que le entregarían a VIXX, escribí un poco junto a otras fans y el poster fue entregado al staff. Después de eso hicimos fila para entrar al lugar, lo cual fue un poco desastroso pues nadie sabía bien por donde tenía que entrar; pero después de seguir a las masas, por fin entré y llegué a mi lugar designado.

I bought some merchandise like a BAP CD, a Nu’est and VIXX T-shirt among other things. Another activity that I could participate was to sign a poster for VIXX, I wrote a little message with other fans and the poster was delivered to staff. After that, we got in line to enter the place, which was a bit of a disaster because nobody knew where to go; but after following the bunch of people, I finally went inside the venue and got my designated place.

El concierto comenzó y como teloneros estuvieron AJ Raphael, Dumbfoundead, Daze47 y BWB los cuales calentaron el ambiente e hicieron que la gente comenzara a levantarse de sus asientos. Después de ellos, el show principal comenzó y BAP salió al escenario para cantar No Mercy y otros éxitos que se comenzaban a popularizar en ese año; después siguió G.Na quien con su gran sonrisa, aura amable y asombrosa voz, deleito al público; aquí es donde me levanté de mi asiento, pues los próximos a presentarse fueron VIXX, N tratando de hablar en inglés con sus tarjetas y a todos se les notaba el nerviosismo por llevar apenas unos pocos meses como un grupo idol; me quedé de pie cuando el siguiente artista en salir fue Nu’est, con tanta energía en el escenario fueron de los más aplaudidos; de aquí se pasó a los más esperados: EXO-M y sus fans que gritaron con todas sus fuerzas; el acto final de la noche fue 4minute quienes cerraron con broche de oro el primer KCON, evento que ni se imaginaría en lo que llegaría a ser.

The concert began and as the opening act was AJ Raphael, Dumbfoundead, Daze47 and BWB which heated the atmosphere and made people began to stand up. After them, the main show started and BAP came on stage to sing No Mercy and other hits that began to popularize in that year; then G.Na took the stage with her great smile, friendly aura and amazing voice, to delight the public; then is when I stood up as well, since the next performer was VIXX, N trying to speak English with help of a few cards and all you could see was their nervousness, because they had just debuted few months ago as an idol group; I remained standing when the next artist to come out was NU'EST, with so much energy on stage, they were one of the most acclaimed; here we went with the most anticipated artist of the night: EXO-M and their fans whom shouted with all their strength; the final act of the night was 4minute who closed with a grand finale the first KCON, an event that no one imagined what it would become.

Algo negativo sobre las fans, no del evento, fue que cuando EXO-M termino su presentación las fans se empezaron a ir y se notaba mucho, pues 4minute se estaba presentando todavía y las fans de EXO-M eran muchísimas.

En fin, me divertí mucho y si tuvo cosas negativas, pero lo único que siento que de verdad fue malo fue lo de los pases. A parte de eso, creo que fue muy buena convención y el concierto increíble con casi puros grupos rookies que años después veríamos ganar una gran cantidad de fans, premios y seguir subiendo en el mundo del k-pop. Esto es todo sobre la primera edición de KCON, espero que les guste y les sea de ayuda mi experiencia (y que no se quejen tanto ya de KCON, han mejorado muchísimo en poco tiempo).

Something negative about the fans, not the event, was that when EXO-M finished his presentation the fans started to leave and it was really obvious because 4minute was still performing and EXO-M fans were many.

Anyway, I had fun and yes it had negative things, but the only thing I really feel that was bad, was the vouchers situation. Besides that, I think it was very good convention and amazing concert with almost only rookie groups that years later we would see them win a lot of fans, awards and continue to rise in the world of K-pop. This is all about the first edition of KCON, I hope you like it and will be helpful my experience (and do not complain much about KCON, they have improved a lot in a short time).
